World Wildlife Day 2026 Campaign Promotes Responsible Tourism and Strengthens Public Awareness Against Illegal Wildlife Trade

Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR – In celebration of World Wildlife Day 2026, the Department of Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, through the CITES Management Authority of Lao PDR, together with the GIZ Protection and Sustainable Use of Forest Ecosystems and Biodiversity (ProFEB) Project and conservation partners, strengthened nationwide efforts to reduce demand for illegally traded wildlife through an integrated public awareness campaign targeting travellers, tourists and the general public.

As part of the campaign, multilingual wildlife awareness display panels in Lao, English and Chinese were installed at key public locations, including major Lao China Railway stations. The displays carried clear messages discouraging the purchase, possession, transport and consumption of illegally traded wildlife and wildlife products while informing the public of penalties under Lao law for wildlife crime. The campaign also promoted official wildlife crime reporting channels and highlighted the public health risks associated with consuming wildlife products, including the potential spread of zoonotic diseases.

The awareness materials featured iconic protected species such as elephants, Asiatic black bears and pangolins, emphasising the importance of conserving the rich biodiversity of Lao PDR and protecting CITES listed species from illegal trade. Designed to reach both domestic and international travellers, particularly Chinese speaking visitors, the campaign reinforced responsible tourism and encouraged greater public participation in wildlife conservation.

The railway station displays complemented the nationwide Lao Wildlife Heroes campaign launched for World Wildlife Day 2026, creating an integrated online and offline communication programme that reached thousands of travellers across Vientiane Capital, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay and Luang Namtha. Through targeted communication and public engagement, the campaign increased awareness of wildlife protection laws, promoted responsible consumer behaviour and strengthened understanding of the legal and public health consequences associated with illegal wildlife trade.

The initiative forms part of the implementation of the National Demand Reduction Strategy and Public Awareness Campaign Implementation Plan, supporting Lao PDR commitments under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), including Resolution Conf. 17.4 (Rev. CoP19) on demand reduction strategies to combat illegal trade in CITES listed species.

The campaign was implemented under the ProFEB Project and the global Partnership Against Wildlife Crime in Africa and Asia, implemented by GIZ and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKNV). Through close cooperation among government agencies, conservation organisations and development partners, the initiative continues to strengthen public awareness, encourage responsible consumer behaviour and reinforce Lao PDR commitment to protecting its wildlife heritage and fulfilling its obligations under CITES.
